I recently shifted the idiot box out of room. Reason? It was too much a waste of time. My time at hostel taught me how much time we waste on TV. In comparison, we don't even think about it at the hostel but when at home we are hooked to it.
Am I missing the TV entertainment? Of course not. I still have the Internet.
With the internet speeds fast enough to stream videos, one can watch online videos.
Another concept is that of Web Series. Here is a list of some Web Series.
But what about your favorite TV serials? Why, you can download them. This is even more helpful when your favorite serials are not broadcasted in your counrty.
Take, for example, Prison Break. I know about 50-odd guys in my hostel addicted to the series. Since, the latest season isn't aired here, they download the latest episode every week. Moreover, its commercial-free (not to mention, illegal, but that's not the point.)
So, does it spell doom for commercial breaks? I don't think so. I think the companies will catch upto this concept pretty quick and in the coming years we would see an increase in the no. of Web Series.
A good Web Series wouldn't have to worry about getting a channel to air its season. If it is good enough and people are willing to pay for it, then they would.
There could even be free Web Series wholly supported by advertisements. The interupting commercials would still continue.
But till that time comes, there is still good old TV.
