The first race of 2008 season - The Australian Grand Prix saw just 6 finishes with neither Ferraris finishing the race. McLaren had a good start to the season finishing 1st & 5th. Nick Heidfeld of BMW finished second. At that point, BMW was thought to be the third fastest team with Williams a close fourth.
Come Malayasian Grand Prix, Ferrari bounce back, bagging the 1st place in the race, Robert Kubica of BMW comes 2nd with Kovalainen of McLaren finishing 3rd.
Now, everybody's thinking BMW has improved alot. We hear Heidfeld and BMW principal Mario Theissen's comments on BMW taking a huge leap. But, would they take on Ferrari and McLaren for the Championship? Nah!!
However, Bahrain Grand Prix changes it all. BMW grab the 3rd, 4th positions after Ferrari's 1st and 2nd. The race saw BMW outperforming McLaren in pace, reliabilty and consistency.
The current Contructor's Standings, heading into Europe are:
| BMW | 30 | |
| Ferrari | 29 | |
| McLaren-Mercedes | 28 |
If BMW continue their form, there could be a close call as who would take home the title. All the three teams are Europe-based and no doubt they would step up their performance in known territory.
As far as the Driver's Championship goes, its open for all the six drivers of these teams, with nobody having a clear gap of the other.
| Kimi Räikkönen | 19 | |
| Nick Heidfeld | 16 | |
| Lewis Hamilton | 14 | |
| Robert Kubica | 14 | |
| Heikki Kovalainen | 14 | |
| Felipe Massa | 10 |
Heading into the Spanish Grand Prix, Raikonnen and Kubica are going to have fresh engines and might have an edge over the rest of the pack. The next few races are going to be fun to watch. There's going to be a lot more drama, alot more overtaking and alot more action.
