Just when it seemed that Hamilton would clinch the title, Hamilton’s retirement in the Chinese GP threw the title race wide open for all the three drivers.
The current standings are
Lewis Hamilton 107 pts
Fernando Alonso 103 pts
Kimi Raikkonen 100 pts
The top eight finishers in each Grand Prix score points towards both the drivers’ and the constructors’ world championships, according to the following scale:
1st place: 10 points
2nd place: 8 points
3rd place: 6 points
4th place: 5 points
5th place: 4 points
6th place: 3 points
7th place: 2 points
8th place: 1 point
This means for Kimi to win the Driver’s Championship, he would need the 10 pts plus Alonso finishing 3rd or below and Hamilton finishing 6th or below; which seems highly unlikely. For Alonso, it would be 1st place with Hamilton below 3rd. Hamilton needs to finish 3rd to win the Championship.
Let’s not forget that this is Raikkonen’s team mate Massa’s home Grand Prix. He won here last year. Surely he would try and set up the race for Kimi.
There’s also a possibility of the Driver’s Championship ending in a tie. I guess the Brazilian Grand prix is gonna be a triple threat race…
